How we’re making an
impact
As well as helping our clients showcase their positive impact on people and planet, we try to play our part too. Here’s a snapshot of what we’re doing to reduce our carbon emissions, limit the resources we use and make our own premises and processes as sustainable as possible.
What’s our "why”?
“With Chovil & Thake being based in the Blue Mountains (NSW, Australia), we’re surrounded by the natural beauty of bush, cliffs and waterfalls.
I love that we can walk from the door of our office and be in the bush in just a few minutes. We see stunning views on the way to see clients across Western Sydney, NSW and beyond.
The weather extremes experienced across Australia is a reminder to me that ecosystems are fragile and that we need to protect it.
And to be honest, I’m scared by the forecasts that global warming is speeding up, meaning that life in the next 100 years could become much more difficult. Being a mum to grownup sons, I want to be a good ancestor, protecting our world for them to enjoy when they are my age and beyond.
But I’m also positive that if everyone does their part, we can stop and even reverse the environmental harm this and previous generations have caused.“
Hannah Welch, Sustainability Marketing Specialist & Principal Consultant, Chovil & Thake
To halt climate change and reduce carbon emissions, millions of people need to be imperfectly sustainable.
That’s why we commit to increasing our use of self-generated renewable energy to power our office and EV, buy Australian-made and source locally wherever possible as well as reduce our consumption of consumables and switching to alternatives that can be refilled and recycled.
What & how are we doing?
-
Energy Used
In FY24-25 our office used 842 kWh of electricity. Of this, approximately 58% of this was self generated through our site’s solar panels.
-
Increasing Renewables
Whilst we’re on a renewable energy plan, we want to increase our use of self-generated renewables. Thanks to recently-installed additional solar panels and batteries, we aim to increase our use of self-generated renewables to over 80% in FY25-26.
-
Transport
Our trusty EV is used for most of our commercial journeys. We travel by train into Sydney and offset carbon emissions when travelling internationally or interstate by plane.
-
EV Solar Charging
FY24-25 our EV charging was mainly overnight. which means the energy used was offset fossil-fuelled electricity. With our increased solar capability and battery we’re changing how and when we charge our car to try and use at least 25% self-generated renewables for EV charging in FY25-26.
-
Thinking Local
Where possible we buy recycled paper notebooks and printer paper, refillable pens and uncoated business cards. We also choose Australian-made whenever possible and try to use local businesses for our everyday essentials - including the coffee beans for our morning cuppas freshly roasted in the the next village!
-
Reduce & Recycle More
Whilst we recycled all waste paper generated in the office during FY24-25, we’re aiming to reduce our paper consumption by 30% in the next FY. We will continue to try and avoid packaging where possible - such as taking our own refill containers when restocking coffee beans and snacks. We’re also looking to source fully-recyclable, refillable pens to minimise our waste to landfill during FY25-26.
